SUTRA/TOMORROW (Blend of Art, Technology, Diversity and Authenticity) will present, in the course of three days, artists, concepts and projects that explore the connection between art, science and technology through artist talks, presentations and interactive workshops. At the same time SUTRA/TOMORROW is the initiative and support of the Belgrade Youth Centre to re-launching the art & science festival in Belgrade.

SUTRA/TOMORROW is our nearest and farthest future. SUTRA will not come today, but certainly TOMORROW.

SUTRA/TOMORROW can become a common part of our lives.

SUTRA/TOMORROW, at last – A city with nearly two million inhabitants, a scientific and artistic centre such as Belgrade, definitely has a need for a festival like this.

MYCOPHONE_UNISON: Ecological communities of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi and archaea that live in the human body, make man a microbiome. This knowledge changes the perception of the human body which can no longer be seen as one, but as many entities. Each entity has its own biological role that is being enacted in collaboration with other entities, or on its own, depending on the given environment. In these moments, the body emerges through intra-acting with the environment and is seen as one, despite the fact that its multiple entities are never the same in the next intra-act. The oneness of the body, as such, only occurs in a particular space-time continuum, where it intra-acts and then dissolves into the multiplicity that awaits its new becoming.

 

 

In the space-time continuum of multiplicities, Mycophone_unison serves as a navigation tool. It is a sound map of intra-action between three microbiomes of the bodies of it’s makers and the viewer. By pressing his fingerprint, the viewer sends a signal to the map that processes it through the central celestial plate to the microbiomes that modulate it as a sound of unison. The multiplicities of the authors are heard as one for a brief moment in the here and now.

 

Mycophone_unison shows what the human body is in its becoming, it reveals a multi-unit symbiotic of the individual, whose identity as a construct serves to a particular biopolitical situation. Human bodies are not defined or contained against equally defined environment, but intra-related with everything else.

Can You Feel the Spill?

Can You Feel the Spill? is a microecological, socio-political board game conceived as a social game and android application. It is a subversive social and location game – a microecological intervention that plays with the expectations of players. The idea is based on the use of rural resources unique to the village of Begeč and local infrastructure as a background for cultural and technological research in the field of new media. The game formulates a clear position in relation to political struggle, the impact of capital and the general structure of power relations established in capitalist social order, and addresses the extraction of the black gold – oil. The game refocuses the goals of the emancipation struggle against the capitalist power: it doesn’t take up a position of an absolute external opposition, but rather confronts the player with the mental ecology of daily life – inviting you to play!

 

Les Mislerebles are rebels, informal artistic group and movement from Serbia dedicated to creating and using social games for social change. They are interested in exploring the local socioeconomic issues, geopolitics and ecology. Les Mislerebles use micro-political and micro-social practices, new solidarities, while simultaneously applying a new aesthetic and analytical methodology to foster new/alternative subjectivities. Les Mislerebles are making subversive games that play with the player’s expectations. Les Mislerebles were founded by Isidora Todorović (theorist and artist), in collaboration with Andrea Palašti (artist and independent curator) and Luka Ranisavljević (programmer).

Cargo East Project – The Subdued Existence. Serbian Contemporary Art Scene

 

The Subdued Existence exhibition was shown between 31 May and 3 August 2014 at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, as part of a two-year Cargo East project. It featured 15 works by Serbian artist: Igor Antić, Breda Beban, Goran Despotovski, diSTRUKTURA, Dragan Ilić, Jelena Jureša, Stevan Kojić, MP_art, the Museum of Childhood, Andrea Palašti, Vesna Perunović, Nataša Teofilović, Zoran Todorović, Miloš Tomić and Selman Trtovac.

 

Using contemporary media language, the participating artists and art groups explore different contexts of social environment, especially topics relating to personal attitude towards socio-political transition, migration, exile, globalization, identity issues, daily life, and relationship to the modern economy, capital and technology. Through their topics, many authors discuss issues such as borders, migration and exile. Some authors, prompted by the political or cultural crisis, chose to leave Serbia to study or live abroad, thus becoming immigrants in the countries of Western Europe, North or South America. Being outside the borders or not accepting them, despite all the benefits of multiple hybridization of the so-called nomadic subject, is a very tough, not at all romantic position which a large number of contemporary artists from Serbia today face. They exist on the international art scene, defining themselves through different social contexts, geographical and identity definitions, thus breaking the traditional forms of national art.

 

Sanja Kojić Mladenov (1974), curator, art historian and researcher of contemporary artistic practice, media and gender issues. She works at the Vojvodina Museum of Contemporary Art in Novi Sad. She was the curator of the Serbian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art (2011), and the exhibition Light and Darkness of Symbols by Dragoljub Raša Todosijević, which won the international UniCredit Venice Award. She is the author, curator or selector of many exhibitions and projects at home and abroad, such as: Dress (Code) (2012), About photography (2010), Closeness. Contemporary Art Scene from Serbia, Tokyo (2009), Behind the Barrier, Contemporary Photography from Novi Sad (2009), Space for New Dialogue (2008), In Situ (2007), Lollypop, Body and Consummation (2007), Tensionfield, 2010-2013 Transcription: Jan Triška (2012), Cities Re-imagined, Victor Vasarely (2010) Intensity of Affect. Play is an essential part of our society, which was recognized as a phenomenon only in the 1930s in the pivotal book Homo Ludens – Man the Player. Games have proven to be able to move out of the field of creative, and somewhat frivolous, into the field of art and critical thinking. The presentation DIY: Political game explores the methods and strategies of making political games created by Isidora Todorović. The artist will seek to answer the question whether artistic/political games have the power to go beyond the field of art and play with the reality. Following the presentation, everyone will be invited to take part in a session of the political game Can You Feel the Spill? dealing with the problems and consequences of oil spills in an environmentally protected area.

 

21:00 – Uroš Krčadinac: STORY MAPS – Cartography and Storytelling

Through examples of his works, which range from generative visualization of text to the hand-drawn maps for nonlinear travel writing, Uroš will present the connection between storytelling, cartography and the internet. What are the colors of emotions in the text, how to draw a tweet, what are the story lines and graphs? Is the visualization of data older than writing? Why Tolkien drew maps and family trees? And why Nabokov said that for analysis of Joyce’s Ulysses one only needs a good map of Dublin?

 

Uroš Krčadinac is an award-winning researcher in the field of new media and research assistant in the GOOD OLD AI laboratories at the Faculty of Organizational Sciences in Belgrade, Department of Software Engineering. His fields of interest include: information visualization, storytelling using data, physical visualization, emotional programming, information aesthetics, spoken languages processing, and new media art. His work examines the connections between humans and technology through a variety of media: interactive and linear, visual and textual, generative and hand-drawn. He is the author of Synesketch, the first open-source library for recognition and visualization of emotions in the text, which was presented at conferences and festivals in Europe, Canada and China. He co-authored an interactive documentary about the life of Bosnian Roma, as well as the visualization of the travel expenses of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia. He also deals with generative identities and draws with his GPS device. His academic work, software projects and short animated films have earned him numerous awards.

 

TEXT VISUALIZATION, workshop

Maps, visualization, algorithms and non-linear interfaces are not only tools, but also whole new languages. Science and technology are a new language of today, that we, as J. G. Ballard said, will either learn or remain silent. The workshop deals with mapping the text into the visual, either through computer technology, or manually, or with the help of physical objects. Using the example of Synesketch, his software library for text visualization, as well as other projects involving the intertwining of literature, visual languages ​​and modern technology, he will show some possible synesthetic directions for text visualization. In the second part of the workshop, participants will personally use these technologies, languages, ​​and approaches, or some entirely new, that they invent or create, to visualize the texts, from poetry to the railway timetable. Uroš Krčadinac’s workshop will be conducted in December as part of the Soft Control project.

Euclidean space is a mathematical space that is defined by three dimensions (X, Y, Z coordinates), which is conceived intuitively. The introduction of Spheres, circular objects, in a clearly defined space defined by coordinates, creates unrest. The objects are randomly placed in space and react to visitors by changing the shape and emitting a sound. Their activation completely violates the mathematically conceived space.

 

The number of the spheres can vary, depending on the size and their position in space. The spheres are randomly placed in the space, unequally distant from each other, creating fields of voids and clusters. They are pneumatic and they respond to visitors, like some excited organic creatures, leaping in the air with an accompanying whistle when someone approaches them and tries to pass by them. They are connected by a system of rubber tubes which supply the air. The compressor and a system of valves and sensors determines the order of their activation and deactivation, depending on the presence of the visitors.

Expanded Cinema Performance

The expanded film performance Peoplemeter represents the inner world of signals, frequencies and impulses that drive digital media. Filmed material is made using unusual techniques (video microscope, endoscope, etc.) and formats, and is replete with special optical effects. In this expanded film performance there are no actors. The protagonists are robots and aerials inhabiting a post-apocalyptic Belgrade. The original score was composed by Belgrade guitarist WoO of BelgradeNoise. Mikša Andjelić is the director of photography, Nemanja Babić was responsible for editing, Nemanja Nikolić was the screenwriter, Daniel Milošević was the sound designer, and Stefan Bočvarski designed the robots.

 

DAY TWO: Saturday 22 November, Americana Hall

18:00 Vukašin Stančević: PRESSCYCLAGE, inauguration of the installation

Vukašin’s creative machinery uses printed media during its work to convert their content into an acoustic image and a paper roll. The production process involves a visitor as an active participant, the one who puts the selected parts of the printed media on a belt conveyed by electric engines. On its way, the belt passes underneath a webcam, which sends the picture of the current situation to a screen. At the end of the road, re-recorded images received from the web cameras, are divided into four parts, and processed again (PureData software). Each part reads the color which then the software classifies into three basic colours, according to the RGB scale. Some parts are used to start the rhythm, while the colors trigger different instruments. The sound pitch depends on the obtained color saturation. After passing the last stop and the corresponding sound “score”, the paper is rolled and the rolls are pinned to the wall. Vukašin’s production line in which a visitor affects the change of signal/information, indicates our position in relation to the information released by the mass media. Our illusion that we have a choice of or control over information, is hereby transferred, by the recycling process, into music which replaces the media noise.

He conducts research in creative photography, using it to create prints using digital printing techniques. He experiments in the field of multimedia arts, focusing on ways of translating images into sound. He has participated in numerous workshops and exhibitions (photos and prints). He is the founder of the noise band LOMZ, which creates music on a hand-made guitar, keyboards, iPod and in computer programs. For each song a matching video material is created.

Biotricity. The networked sound installation Biotricity uses new green energy technology called microbian fuel cell to explore the intricate relationship between the nature and technology, biological systems and electronic networks. The installation consists of neatly aligned bacteria-fuel cells. Once they are connected, the cells form a mini bio-power plant that turns into sound the process of generating electricity from bacteria living in mud and water. Biotricity was developed by Razia Rasa Smite, Raitis Smits and Martins Ratniks together with sound artist and composer Voldemars Johansons and a young biologist from the University of Latvia. The latest version of Biotricity project (featured in the exhibition field), called Battery with ponds, will be broadcast live during the SUTRA/TOMORROW festival from a pond in the Riga Botanical Garden..

 

Fields. Exhibition Fields tries to identify those expanded fields of artistic practices which contextually provide fertile ground for ideas and practices aimed at overcoming the current crisis, finding new paths for future development by bringing together traditionally separate domains. Fields deal with new environmental and transverse trends in art, emphasizing the potential future trajectories for various kinds of activities that combine politics, technology, environment, gender and semiotics. Which fields act as a catalyst and support to those artistic practices that offer the greatest potential for social change towards a more imaginative and sustainable way of life? Who have been the precursors in the last 30-40 years and what can we learn from these often untold stories?

 

Daina Silina is the organizer, working since 2001 for RIXC – Centre for New Media Culture in Riga, Latvia. She has an extensive experience in project management, production of Art + Communication international festival and other events (exhibitions, symposia, workshops, etc.). Since 2008, she has been one of the editors of the Acoustic Space, magazine for transdisciplinary research in arts, science, technology and society. Daina holds a master’s degree in cultural theory from the Latvian Academy of Culture.

 

20:00 Saša Spačal, CONNECTIONS, presentation/lecture

Saša Spačal, a multimedia artist, has a background in the humanities. She mastered computer graphics and web and video production through a number of workshops. She is currently working in graphic design, real-time interactive visualization and multimedia, trying to link various technological and biological organisms. Saša has participated in various projects and exhibitions staged at the Modern Gallery, Škuc and Alcatraz Gallery in Slovenia. As a member of the Temp Group, she worked on various interventions and installations exhibited in public settings and towards developing strategies for alternative use of abandoned spaces. She also participated in the exhibitions Odprti Rog (Open Horn), Pogovarjanja/Conversations/Conversas and Mapping/Archiving/Analysis of Disappeared Art Spaces. As a researcher she was part of the international research project Performing the City. Her installations have been shown at international exhibitions and festivals such as Haip Festival – Ljubljana, Enter 5: Datapolis – Prague, AmberFest’11: Next Ecology – Istanbul, De: sonanz 2012 – Skopje, Device_art 4.012. – Zagreb, Device_art 4.013 – Prague, and Enter 6: Biopolis – Prague. Currently, Saša is working on several projects that are focused on the relationship between living organisms and technology, in collaboration with the Kapelica gallery, Kibla multimedia center and Lyudmila – artistic and scientific laboratory. In the field of interactive visualization and sound design she develops strategies for the use of physical interfaces in generating sound and visual images, as a member of the Theremidi Orchestra.

 

Together with Ida Hirschenfelder, Saša is developing the so-called CHIPke platform, exploring the position of women who are active in science, technology and new media art, and providing them space for conversation, by creating a hacker space with relevant educational programs.

 

21:00 Jasna Jovićević & The Sound of Birds,

presentation of a musical/environmental project and musical performance

 

The sound of birds is a scientific/educational/artistic/activist project that brings together local civil society associations, citizens and the government sector in order to increase the participation of the civil society in the decision making and legislative changes in the area of environmental protection, following the EU example, and to strive for a better and more inclusive management of environmental protection and sustainability through activities such as scientific research, professional and creative education of the young people, modern creativity and prominent visibility in the media. The Sound of Birds project is led by three civil society organizations: Citizens association ArTrust from Subotica, association of nature lovers Riparia from Subotica, and Citizens Association AŠC from Palić. All three organizations have been committed to environmental protection for a number of years, through distinctive activities and practices, which enable this project to have an innovative, multi-disciplinary, and varied approach to environmental protection.

 

Jasna Jovićević. Born in Subotica, graduated from the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, majoring in jazz saxophone, and acquired a master’s degree in music composition from York University in Toronto. Jasna won the 1st prize at the International Ethno Music Competition in Milan (Italy), 2nd prize at the International Balkan Art Festival in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and the 3rd prize at the Contest for Best Jazz Composition organized by the Hungarian Jazz Federation. She was chosen to represent Serbia and Montenegro at the XII European Biennial of Young Artists in 2005 in Naples, Italy. She has performed with renowned musicians in Hungary and throughout Europe and Canada, and spent several years on study tours in New York, Banff, San Francisco, Spain and Italy. Since 2009 she has led a musical group Jasna Jovićević Improv Collective, which performs her compositions, arranged for string quartet, saxophone and electronics. Her debut album Invented Reality, featuring her original compositions and arrangements, was released in 2008, in collaboration with musicians from the Toronto local scene. Her second album The Sound of Birds was released in 2013. For the last ten years she has worked as a professor of flute, saxophone, music theory and history. Having studied in India, Slovenia and Italy, she became a certified yoga teacher and runs her own yoga centre Iskra Joga in Subotica. Jasna is the author and leader of the artistic and educational projects for children and contemporary art through the NGO ArTrust. Her most prominent projects are Mjuziklaža, Improv Collective International Music Residency, 12 Tons of Music, and The Sound of Birds.

The Sound of Birds project is implemented through the Regional Environmental Center (REC), and funded by the Swedish Agency for International Cooperation and Development.

All the secrets of our planetary underground on the importance of mushrooms in the ecosystem and their cultivation will be revealed at the workshop. Crocheting Math

Crocheting Math Project explores the art of creation of the Fibonacci sequence through crocheting. Their workshops develop crocheting algorithms of geometric models inspired by Fibonacci sequence. Potential participant explores offered techniques, and then chooses whether to only draw, play with magnets, make animations or applications (open source in Processing Programming Language), develop an algorithm for a particular form of crochet or crochet on the basis of a given algorithm. The aim is to reach a clear idea of ​​the model, calculate the value of certain functions (circumference of a series of circles/squares), draw the model and experiment through crocheting.

 

Group O

The Group O was founded in 2013 as a platform for dialogue and discussion about education and an incubator for independent initiatives in the field of education. The goal of the founders was to create a space for education – to exchange ideas and experiences, to get to know each other and all those who are in some way involved with education (or are interested to get involved), and work together on the actualization of these ideas. Group O has no formal membership, but is open to all who are interested to join. As members of the Group O Milena Životić Ilić, Ivana Djokić and Lilian Wieser are engaged in finding mathematical laws and experimenting with surface and space in the field of handicrafts – coding and decoding crochet patterns. Combining mathematical concepts, algorithms and handicrafts, their wish is to unite the area of ​​intellectual and manual labour, not forgetting the aesthetics and values ​​of traditional folk art creation.

Media artist Incredible Bob works in the field between Glitch art and show business, and his work is characterized by caloric colourful dispersions and chromatic abrasions. He has been on the international scene for more than a decade, and his works have been shown at more than 300 festivals around the world, including festivals of new media and digital art Mutek, Transmediale, TodaysArts, European Media Art Festival and others. He has collaborated with artists Dan Deacon, Mats Gustafsson, DJ Rupture, Deadbeat.om, Lillevan Pobjoy, Mihajlo Ristić et al. Incredible Bob is constantly deals with the question: What’s new in the new media?

 

20:00 Hrvoje Hiršl: Laser toner, spheres, feedback, Artist Talk

Hrvoje Hiršl (1982, Croatia), artist and designer, currently at post-graduate studies, MediaArtHistories at Donau-Universität Krems in Austria led by Oliver Grau. He is the founder and coordinator of the theory program I’MM, a newly initiated Media Lab as part of the Zagreb SC’s Culture of Change program. He participated in group exhibitions (Vizura Aperta, 2011; Magdalena International Festival, 2006 and 2010; HDD 0708, 2008; DVK 97-07, 2007), and independently at the radio show of the Third Croatian Radio Program The Image of Sound (2011) and the VN Gallery (2010). He was a semi-finalist of the Adobe Design Achievement Awards (2009).In 2012, he won the scholarship as part of the KulturKontakt Austria. His art projects go beyond contemporary art and the discourse of new media art, examining the materiality of the object, the energy emitted in space and limitation of media.

The idea of the festival is to bring together for the first time the new visionaries of the present and the future and to present their work in a whole new light and in a manner that was never seen before in the artistic and scientific scene in Serbia. Notwithstanding the steady progress that technology brings, our focus is directed to issues of critical importance to society.

SUTRA/TOMORROW festival at first was a pilot project in 2009, as part of the Third Science Festival. This project included screenings of scientific and artistic films in collaboration with the New York Science Film Festival, and the presentation of Visikord software, developed by the programmer Davor Magdić, who lives and works in California. The first SUTRA/TOMORROW festival took place in 2010, as part of the Fourth Science Festival, and it was visited by more than 5,200 visitors. It presented 13 artists/researchers. The second SUTRA/TOMORROW festival was organized in the context of the Fifth Science Festival, from 2 to 4 December 2011, in the National Bank of Serbia gallery at Belgrade’s Slavia Square. The second SUTRA/TOMORROW festival presented nine works. The fourth SUTRA/TOMORROW festival was held in 2013 in the Belgrade Youth Centre, and it presented the following artists: Ana Rajčević, Chris Bruckmayr, Future Lab, Dejan Pestotnik, MMC KIBLA, Dobrivoje Milijanović, Ivan Stanić, Kišobran (Umbrella), Monika Pocrnjić, Nataša Teofilović, raum.null live, Soft Control, and Stevan Kojić.

 

SUTRA/TOMORROW festival was born in 2009. It was created, it disappeared, it finally re-emerged, the festival we missed and needed to explore the relationship between technology and art, to motivate society with the aim to develop science and arts, to present scientific and technological achievements through art, to offer examples operating on the border between the two, examples where the two blend, intertwine or merge, to show children, young people and experts that science and art are an indispensable part of everyday life, and that what is now a scientific or artistic experiment TOMORROW can become a common part of our lives.

SUTRA/TOMORROW festival is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia and the Belgrade City Assembly. Workshops and lectures included in SUTRA/TOMORROW are part of Soft Control, which was implemented with the support of the European Commission.

 

Hosting of the Mycophone projects is part of international cooperation with MMC KIBLA (Maribor). The Sound of Birds project is implemented through the Regional Environmental Center (REC), and funded by the Swedish Agency for International Cooperation and Development.
